More and more people spend the most of their time on the sitting position, at home but also at work behind their desk and computer. It become a real problem for our health and for our society. There is lot of medical studies which explains that « our culture of sitting may be responsible for about 173,000 cases of cancer (Breast and Colon) each year » (Live Science, Nov 3, 2011*1) just in United States.
These research told us that « reducing the daily average time that people spend sitting to less than 3 hours would increase life expectancy by 2 years » (NBC News July 9, 2012).
While sitting down is not the only thing that can cause trouble (adopting any particular posture for long periods of time can slow down your circulatory system), sitting is one of the most pervasive postures in modern civilizations. So how can you increase your activity levels if you have a
desk job, as so many of us do these days?
To decrease the risks of health issues I propose to motivate people to practise more physical activity with or around the chair related to recommendations from World Health Organization by using a smart cushion, PadPad. The cushion will monitor our activity, make physical exercices and play video game with all our body.
PadPad is able to know our sitting position, our movements, the level of activity, how many times we change our position, how many times we stay inactive since it records all the movements of the chair where the cushion is placed.
With all of these information the cushion will send feedback and notifications about our health and will monitoring our activity through a mobile app.
PadPad is recognized as an external peripheral like a keyboard, a mouse or a gamepad, so it is possible to configure it easily. Besides monitoring and exercises features, PadPad allow us to play with any video game available on our computer, tablet, smartphone or videogame console. The idea is not to create new games for this device but to ensure that it works with existing ones.
