Chair Funambule Loïc Bard Cuisine minimaliste Tables, chaises & bancs

The Funambule Chair is a piece of handmade bentwood furniture designed by Loïc Bard and Nicolas Granger. It is inspired by the form and elegance of traditional Japanese furniture. The goal was to create an extremely light yet solid chair with a poetic design approach, which invites visitors to touch it and sit on it. Different from a typical chair structure, the Funambule Chair has neither spindles nor rails to support the backrest. The backrest, the armrest, and the two front legs of the chair are joined to become one continuous line. Like the practice of funambulism, the backrest is elevated from the seat like the rope for the tightrope walkers to dance on.
The Funambule chair is made of ash wood. The ash wood was soaked in water and then steamed so that it was flexible enough to be bent into a half circle shape. The backrest used two pieces of wood glued together to allow more rigidity. It gives additional comfort when the users site down and lay back. The designers applied traditional tenon and mortise joinery methods for the joints, and made the joints curved and smooth with a great amount of sanding. The seat is purely carved by hand and the back is slightly curved for extra comfort. The finishes come with clear natural oil, stained white or black natural oil.
