1.
The basics of design

The philosophy of client is concentrated in the production department. So they had planned concretely about the layout. According to a report, German economic activities are very influenced by ‘mittelstand’ that they had exemplified. In that sense, we can say that the minds of German production are reflected in that space. Therefor I plotted that they perform well on the new operation center which was built on the basis of traditional thought of Japan.

For instance, the Japanese masonry preferred natural shape stones whose contact points had been adjusted, although ancestors had known the method of molded stones. About the use of wood, In the western world the wood is homogenized like engineering wood. But in Japan characteristics of wood are utilized and the only edge of wood are processed as ‘tsugite-shikuchi’. And furthermore, Kimono is cut from the fabric by straight line not to waste it. So the fabric can be remodeled to another clothes. Or in the culture of cuisine to keep the characteristics of foodstuffs is important for Washoku. These instance show that the Japanese culture receives something as a given, and grasp its characteristics and add minimum improvement to it. I think that in the western world the technique to overwrite nature had brought the Industrial Revolution to the world and in Japan the technique to answer every situation arrived at the special skill nobody can imitate. Therefor the design of this operation center is based on the basics and effort to understand the essence of things.

2.    Action for issues

The new operation center is an almost assembly factory. Their factories in the world can be divided into two categories. One of them makes and assembles parts. The other only assembles them. The new factory is the latter. The same function factory have been in Iwata. They had learned some lessons from Iwata factory which was converted from another. So we were given two important aims. The first is that the production department is filled up natural light and fresh air. The second is needless air-conditioning in summer.

The building site is in culture academic area. It faces the residential area across the east side frontal road that is 12m width, and at the west side, a river is flowing on the place lower 13m than ground level. At the south and north sides, It faces another facility site across the road. The north side frontal road (w=6m) is restricted to use and the south side frontal road (w=11m) is community road. All roads are lower than ground level. The difference in level is 0.4m at the South-west and 1.8m at the north-east. It is halfway at the crossroads of the south-east. That is all about the neighboring situation, however the building site have included very important thing, which is power cables above there. We can’t build under them. So the new factory had to be located in the east of the building site.

Heavy vehicles pass the south-west gate which is farthest from the residential area. And the difference with the frontal road is smallest there. Private vehicles pass the north-east gate. Because the area of trucks is not enough to accept them. And pedestrians approach from the south-west stair which is the nearest to bus stops and far from both gates of vehicle. It also reduces the cost with restricting heavy vehicles area.

I thought that the neighborhood preferred the sign of life to machines. So the office was built facing the residential area. But extreme openness make them nervous. So punched folding boards were mount on the east windows at second floor and control direct sunshine and privacy. At first floor, windows show them staff working. Because I thought the large wall pressured them. They will feel staffs working but understand nobody pass the slope of plants.

It is almost all that I cared about the neighborhood. But another wits were necessary for meeting the requirement of the client. In japan, that has been popular thing which had got natural light and fresh air. For example “Machiya” which was long depth terrace house was including courtyards. The new factory also has a courtyard between the office and the production department, which is also expected to moderate influence each other. And the courtyard gave the production department a lot of apertures on the east wall. The client has a plan of the expansion in the future. The north wall has high-side lights with sliding windows which are connected 60m. The west wall has 5 over-sliders made with FRP. The south wall has sliding windows which are connected 81m and are stacked. The east wall can get sliding windows which are connected 33m and are stacked.

In addition, the deep eaves is mounted on the south and west walls. It aim to reduce the direct gain of the production department and the asphalt pavement around there. The south part of it composes the colonnade with the column and same diameter vertical drain. In the past, there was an Engawa which was semipublic space under the eaves of Japanese houses. It was buffer zone between the inhabitants and neighborhood. In the Kyoto operation center, the 6m height colonnade is put in front of the 10m height production department. It connects this operation center to walkers on the frontal road softly.

We had known the wind from the west had often blown at this place. So I thought that it enters at the west over-sliders and comes out of other windows. But if these windows cannot be opened by a typhoon or a heavy rain, we can make three roof-fan work. And the insulation materials are spread all over the roof given huge calorie. In addition, the solar panels are mounted on the roof. They generate electricity and are the sunshade too.

About design, several elements modeled on ancestor’s wisdom. They are not copy but abstract design. Because I hope that the user associates this operation center with background of oneself. For instance, about the colonnade, the client requested to contain a part like the Fushimi-inari at first. I didn’t explain which it is, but I wondered that he understood that the colonnade was just the thing. But there is a colonnade around the world, so another person associated it with foreign one.

Furthermore, the requests of client give us a sign that this building spreads out horizontally. But there are no materials without joints. So I grasped characteristics of materials and covered their production system with large surfaces which were made with repeating division as considering details of joints. Thus the unkempt joints were excluded and an organized wall were completed. The facade looks like traditional Japanese building consequently, which is the result that followed the traditional thought of Japan.

At last, I refer to the color coordination. It is based on two national flags and the flag of the company. They are disintegrate in each element and reconstitute. The background colors are charcoal gray and white. Accent colors are yellow, orange and red. The important one is charcoal gray which color is calm and suitable for exterior wall at the point making dirt not outstanding. But a massive scale charcoal gray presses the neighborhood, so I cared how to paint. A grain of the spray is as small as possible and half glossy, which makes the effect such as a white filter by reflecting sunshine. Thus pressure of them are reduced.
