This home, designed by Estudio Volta based in Zapopan, Mexico, combines materials, volumes, textures and light in unique and novel combinations.

Due to the building's orientation towards the sun, a wonderful lattice element has been designed to protect the interior from excessive sunlight and temperature changes; thus natural light can be enjoyed without compromising the views and aesthetics of the project.

This element becomes a defining part of the design, giving it a strong formal and visual identity. Now, let's take a look – outside and in!

The brick and latticed exterior

Here, we can see the street facade which dons the lattice in question. The lower level is inset, forming a covered recess at the main entry to the home.

This level is marked by a brick and timber material composition, whereas the upper level and wing walls are restrained to an all-white material selection. For more facade ideas, take a look through the myriad of examples supplied here!

The entry

The entry is subtle and understated. The various and subtle changes in level on approach to the home, highlight the transition and threshold moment of crossing from the exterior to the interior.

Open plan social space

The spatial arrangement provides great flexibility in the interior. The open plan social area overlooks the rear garden, and the kitchen and dining space sit adjacent a small semi-open terrace that is connected to the yard.

This open plan living space on the ground floor is accompanied by a room that can either function as a study or bedroom; from this room there is direct access to the bathroom which also connects to the lobby, providing a guest bathroom.

The entry lobby and stair

The double height volume that houses the entry lobby also contains the staircase and serves as a link between the social areas of the home and the more private spaces.

The lattice

And last, but certainly not least, we are given a close-up of the lattice as experienced from the interior of the home. An intermediary layer is formed between the interior room and the lattice structure – forming a threshold space of sorts that feels neither entirely 'inside' not entirely 'outside'. Where there are breaks in the lattice, glass inserts guard from falling, yet, they are almost entirely invisible!
