Tiling has been used to decorate interiors for thousands of years. It is commonly used in areas where moisture is high, like the bathroom, kitchen, and outdoor living areas of the home. There are many different varieties of tiling, both by way of pattern and material.

While many agree that tiles can be quite lovely, few can claim that they are tile literate. To be tile literate a person must be familiar with the different tile designs out there as well as the common kinds of materials used to make them. Luckily, becoming tile literate is much easier than say, learning a different language or understanding astrophysics! We’ve even prepared a guide to help you get started. Here are six tile patterns you should try incorporating into your home.

Classic harlequin

When it comes to floors and countertops, stone tiles are often preferred to the ceramic ones typically reserved for bathrooms and backsplashes. Originating in Mexico, the harlequin design does well as a stone tile because it is cheap and its simplicity makes it a good candidate for covering vast surfaces without being visually overwhelming.

Harlequin in its simplest form is essentially comprised of diagonally oriented black and white tiles, but there are more geometrically complex kinds that have a 3-dimensional appearance. Including harlequin in your home will give it a polished, modern effect. You can also play around with the way these tiles are joined depending on the effect you want. Leaving space for a visible grout is one option, but many prefer to install these tiles with a tight joint.

Duquesa designs

Duquesa tiles will give your interior a hand-painted, vintage feel. They are most commonly associated with rustic, Mediterranean styles of design. Duquesa tiles are experiencing a resurgence in popularity nowadays, and they can enhance just about any room with their vibrant, dynamic appearance.

These beautiful tiles are, however, pretty expensive due to the fact that the painstaking creation of the duquesa tiles requires that the tile maker hand paint each one individually. As is evident by these Moroccan duquesa tiles from Prune Sucrée, the detailing on each different tile is really quite remarkable. If you love the look of duqeusa, try adding them to your interior as a decorative accent rather than covering an entire wall or floor in this variety. Duquesa works nicely as a kitchen backsplash, for instance.

Kaleidoscopic kelim

Kelim tiles come in many different designs. What unites them all is that each individual tile combines to create a continuous whole, as evidenced by the tiling used in the kitchen backsplash displayed above.

Typically, kelim tiles are made up of simple, angular geometric patterns. Some popular varieties of Kelim tiles include hook, woody, and goose-eye. Of course, these tiles can come in many different colours and textures, too. Kelim tiles will certainly add a sense of visual intrigue to your look.

Infamous lucifer

The name alone might make you shudder, but Lucifer tiles themselves are quite elegant and dramatic in their own right. While the tiles in the centre of this design are bold and unique, the true Lucifer pattern here is situated at the border.

The Lucifer pattern is an age-old style characterised by swirls with hooked points. They truly do look like something out of a medieval church or castle. Lucifer tiles typically come in cement, and black and white is most popular. It is possible to find Lucifer in other colour tones as well, though. The tiles are said to have originated in Morocco, and they are water resistant enough to be used in bathrooms.

Psychedelic stripes

Because tiles, by nature, consist of many individual pieces, it is less common to see them arranged in such a way that their formation creates a continual stripe pattern. Yet, this look is certainly possible, and when executed correctly, it can have a stunning effect.

Take this bathroom, for example. The technicolor tiles are aligned to create horizontal stripes that create the effect of passing neon lights under speed distortion. What a powerful effect this style can have! Striped tiles can help to enhance the dimensions of a room. If you opt for such strong colours like these, it’s best to reserve the striped tiles for a mere portion of the room rather than for the entire thing.

Delicate dots

Although it is less common than the traditional square tile, small circular tiles enjoy their fair share of notoriety. This variety is often used on bathroom walls and floors, but they can be useful in the outdoor arena as well. They have a lovely shimmery surface that can be likened to the scales of a fish. Dot tiles have a vintage sophistication that can enhance any decorative scheme.

They are on the cheaper end of the spectrum, which means they’re ideal for anyone looking to elevate the look of a given space without spending a fortune. Variations on the circular dot tile include hexagonal and octagonal shapes as well. The ones used in this bathroom are pleasantly subtle and delicate.
