The impact of colour on emotional, intellectual and intuitive aspects of our lives is immeasurable. Each colour has specific properties and characteristics. Since colours are a reflection of light, they also create intense vibrations, which is why the right selection of colours around the house can create the ideal atmosphere. As per Vastu Shastra, colours also influence the home environment and the mood and health of people that live within it. So, the right tones for furnishings, walls and other decor is essential to balance the energy and to create a vibrant house.

The right colours bring healing energy into the house and drive away all negativity of mind and spirit. So, let us learn a bit about use of Vastu recommended colours in different parts of the house.

1. A harmonious facade and entrance

For the entrance, depending on the direction the house is facing, off-white, peach, cheerful yellow or green can create a welcoming feel. Avoid dull or dark colours like brown or maroon. Exteriors with pleasant colours attract positive energy. Choose the colour of the nameplate or façade, depending on the direction in which the main entrance door opens. Always have the name in white irrespective of the background colour.

  • If the door opens in the north, use green.
  • For the northeast direction, yellow is more suitable.
  • An entrance facing the east will benefit from a maroon nameplate.
  • For the south-east, use orange.
  • If it is in the west, then blue is the best colour.
  • For front façades of homes facing the south, use red. Those who do not like red can use tones close to it like orange or tan.

2. Energise the living room

The living room represents the homeowner’s style and personality. Therefore, it must be attractive, comfortable and energetic. With the right combination of furniture, furnishings and decor pieces it can look beautiful, but it needs the correct elements, including colour, to bring positive energy and warmth. While Vastu experts believe that the living room should face either the north or northeast direction, it is not always possible to ensure that it does. So, to strike the right energy balance, use appropriate colours on the walls and furnishings. Brightly coloured furnishings in yellow, pink, green, gold and turquoise bring vibrant energy into the room, whereas walls in white, beige, green or cream are charming and soothing.

3. Dining room colours to whet appetites and encourage conversations

While energetic colours like green, orange and yellow are recommended for modern dining areas, cheerful grey and brown tones should be avoided. Paintings of food, greenery and happy things can be used in the area to stimulate the appetite and encourage pleasant conversations during meals.

4. Kitchen for happy meals

A kitchen located in the south or southeast region can be given bright hues like yellow and orange, which signify fire and encourage power and optimism. Never use blue for the kitchen as the colour represents water (which puts out the fire). Other appropriate colours for the kitchen as per Vastu are white, which denotes purity and positivity, pink that signifies love and togetherness, or even green, which stands for hope and harmony.

5. Puja room with positivity

As per Vastu the best colours for puja rooms, study rooms and meditation areas is yellow, white, indigo or violet – the colours associated with Krishna. The puja room should face the northeast for harnessing maximum power from the sun, which is why the area is often painted yellow or orange. If those shades seem overly bright, then white is also suitable as it signifies purity and peace.

6. Children’s room filled with warmth and laughter

Bedrooms for the children of the house should be located in the northwest direction.  If you don't want to use traditional colours (such as pink for girls and blue for boys) for the nursery, then cheerful and bright tones such as light green that represents youth and growth, or yellow for joy and clarity, are ideal.

7. Serene and peaceful master bedroom

As per Vastu, planets govern the various directions, which affect positive and negative energy inside the house. The master bedroom should ideally be located in the southwest region of the house for providing stress-free sleep to its occupants. As the direction represents the earth element, it should have the right colours to avoid disharmony and clashes among the occupants. The southwest bedroom should be painted with earthy tones like light brown, ivory, ochre yellow, pink or gold for health, gratitude, strength and endurance. A bedroom in the west should be grey or blue, while one in the southeast, which is ruled by the fire element should be blue or green. A combination of blue, brown and pink is ideal for any master bedroom. These shades can be brought in with bedcovers and other decor accessories.

8. The right colours for an accident-free bathroom

A clean and efficiently designed bathroom is as essential for the house as other rooms. Ideally, it should be located in the northeast section of the house. Light shades of silver, white and cream are ideal, but if the room is in the east, then use light shades of green, brown or blue. If the bathroom is in the southeast then choose muted shades of red, pink, orange, violet or purple. For a bathroom in the southeast, pick yellow or cream, which are Vastu neutral tones. For the right balance in a mid-sized bathroom, use colours and design elements as recommended by an experienced bathroom designer.
