Today’s piece of design inspiration comes from the professionals over at Pure & Original. Located in Lelystad, The Netherlands, Pure & Original is known for its deluxe dedication to paint and wall coverings.

The firm was started back in 2006 by Erwin Floor who, together with his wife, built their own house after drawing inspiration from rural Belgian homes, which were known for their bold and beautiful walls flaunting dark colours and smooth surfaces. However, Erwin found it most difficult to locate the right type of paint for his dream home. It was only after a few months that he discovered a small factory in Belgium who could produce the paint – and that’s how the company, Pure & Original, began producing a varied range of paints suitable for all homes.

Today, the paints have been improved quite considerably. And anybody contacting the firm will be presented with a wealth of options ranging from lacquer finishes and floor paints to exterior paint types and special primers and sealers.

Let’s focus on one of the more unique types that have aided in Pure & Original’s popularity: Fresco lime paint.

1. The history of lime paint

Lime paint has been in existence for thousands of years. Other names it goes by include whitewash, or calcimine, kalsomine, or calsomine. Thanks to Pure & Original, it is made the traditional way and is available in more than 100 colours to please anyone’s personal preference.

Lime paint has been used to protect and decorate walls for centuries. In certain parts of Europe, lime paint forms part of an annual tradition where farmers would use this type of paint to disinfect and protect their stables’ walls from moisture around Easter as soon as it starts to get warmer. Although traditional lime paint won’t close the surface of the walls entirely, it still allows adequate space for “breathing”.

In modern times, lime paint is used more for decorative purposes thanks to its beautiful matte and powdery look with a high opacity.

2. Pure & Original’s lime paint

The Fresco lime paint of Pure & Original is a 100% ecologically and sustainably-produced natural paint, composed of hydrated quicklime and natural pigments. Thanks to its natural qualities and versatile uses, lime paint can be applied anywhere in the house, even in spaces prone to dampness and humidity like the bathroom and kitchen.

3. Lime paint and moisture

What makes lime paint so perfect for bathrooms and kitchens? The fact that it’s perfectly resistant to mould and bacteria. But to up its protective element, one can opt for a protective finish, like the Dead Flat Eco Sealer. This finish seals the surface, making it easily washable and water-resistant.

4. Lime paint: The advantages

The experts at Pure & Original certainly know what they are doing when creating paint, including lime paint. It is made entirely from minerals and stained with 100% natural pigments, making it the ideal product in terms of environmentally friendly options.

The result is one of extreme matt, meaning a weathered and lived-in look for your walls which is prone to even more character as time passes.

In addition it is also fire-proof, helps to prevent moisture problems, and flaunts a beautiful and exceptional appearance with its aesthetic strokes.

5. Lime paint: The disadvantages

Despite the various pros of lime paint, it is not without its fair share of cons. One such is repainting – adding another layer or colour of Fresco lime paint over the old layer is possible. However, should you choose to repaint the wall with another type of paint, Pure & Original’s Fresco Special Fix will need to be applied first.

Touch-ups can be tricky and it’s not unusual to notice some discoloration when various lime paint layers are applied at different times.

Remember that lime paint is porous, meaning it’s easily affected by water. Thus, even though it can be used in kitchens and bathrooms (except the interior surfaces of showers), remember to protect it by applying the Deat Flat Eco Sealer by Pure & Original
