We at homify don’t expect our readers to have polished crystal balls as part of their interiors. But having said that, we also don’t want you to fall behind with the latest and greatest trends, whether it’s the best colours for a kitchen, the newest patterns to include in a living room, or the next best interior style to copy for your entire home.

And seeing as we value you riding the trend wave, we thought we’d take it upon ourselves to keep you updated about what’s hot, including the must-haves for 2018 that professional interior designers are copying left, right and centre (yes, we’ve already begun the year, but there’s still lots of time to get on board the trend train if you missed it).

So, without any further ado, let’s take a look at the top house interior trends for (the rest of) 2018!

1. House interiors: Colours for 2018

The experts over at Pantone may have picked ultra violet to be 2018’s reigning spring colour, but don’t be too quick to discount all the other hues. Grey is still showing up in numerous spaces worldwide (as is evidenced by homify’s chock-a-block images pages, Pinterest boards, interior design magazines, etc.), for both walls and furniture pieces.

And if you really want to be considered “in” for this year, be sure to include some moody hues for your house's interiors as well – dramatic violet, daring navy and emerald green must show up somewhere in your home!

2. House interiors: Include lots of greens

Good news for those with green fingers: plants are trending in 2018, and seeing as they’re one of the most affordable ways to style up a home (and introduce it to a whole new world of freshness and scent), pretty much any household can treat itself to some potted pretties, regardless of budget.

homify hint: The best houseplants that have been known to improve one’s health are Peace lily, English ivy, Variegated snake plant, Red-edged dracaena, and the Broadleaf lady palm.

3. House interiors: Glass for your shower

Although we also have a special place in our hearts for a lovely shower curtain, glass inserts for tub-shower combos seem to be “in” this year. So, rather fold up and store away your colourful shower curtain (trends come and go, after all) and opt for a partial glass divider.

Not only is this one trend that is beautiful, but it also helps to keep compact spaces airy and open (bathrooms tend to be some of the smallest rooms in a house).

4. House interiors: Sofas with bold colours

2018 is the year you can finally treat your living room to an “oh, wow” look – colour-wise, at least. Bold-coloured sofas are in, meaning your seating area can become one major focal point.

And even though we’ve already discussed the trendiest house interior colours for the year, your sofas don’t need to flaunt a moody look at all. Thus, feel free to indulge in beautiful sofas with eye-catching blue, pink and green hues.

5. House interiors: Dark and decadent pieces

Furniture pieces are all set to head on over to the dark side this year. Yes, we are leaving behind the pale, bleached woods that we have come to know and love thanks to Scandinavian designs and going much darker for 2018.

Think of your furniture for this year as retro glamour, as everything from credenzas and sofa legs to dining tables are playing around with darker wooden tones – at least for now.

6. House interiors: Get trendy with textures

Texture ensures character, and for the year ahead, be sure to include furniture with a natural, handmade feel. Rattan and wicker are the star players, and any piece with lots of embellishments and raw edges are a must!

Let’s not forget how irresistible these raw textures become when paired with the right colours, meaning regardless of where you choose to place your new texture-rich furniture (on the terrace, in the dining room, the corner of your guest bedroom… ), the result is sure to be striking.

7. House interiors: Vintage lighting

Vintage-style fixtures are climbing in popularity, meaning classy pieces like aged copper pendants need to be on your shopping list! As we all know how the right lighting fixture can also be a prized décor piece, this means that, with the correct lighting in your kitchen/living room/ any area, you can effectively spend less on additional decorative items.

8. House interiors: Bedrooms with a casual and calm look

2018 house interiors seek bedrooms with a peaceful ambience, meaning those ornate décor and busy patterns need to be tossed immediately. Instead, opt for a pared down, almost minimalist-like look that ensures a calm design for your place of rest.

Add in the appropriate fabrics (in simple colours) and a few functional pieces, and you can rest assured that your bedroom will be considered trendy for the year ahead.

9. House interiors: Doors that wow

Time to style up those simple interior doors. What was once seen as a simply ‘pass-through’ piece from one room to another has become another excuse to flaunt some pizzazz. So, whether you choose to splash some striking paint onto that door, frame it with an ornate frame or hang a message mat on it, ensure that, once you’re done, nobody will be able to ignore that door like before.

10. House interiors: Botanical prints

See our last trend tip for 2018 as a continuation of number two’s greenery: botanical prints. Flowers and botanical designs are here to ensure your home enjoys a fresh spring-like style all year, whether it’s splashed across the wallpaper, framed in a small art piece against the wall, or blooming on a few scatter cushions on your bed/sofa.
