Whether you are someone who loves shopping for that perfect curtain that matches your living room or someone who only goes curtain shopping with a gun on your head; there is no denying the huge importance that curtains play in our homes. The earliest known usage of curtains was in the 2nd to 6th century and excavation sites at Olynthus, Pompeii, and Herculaneum too have hinted at their widespread usage even during those times. Apart from imparting the very basic function of privacy, curtains impart that personal touch which an otherwise sparse room fails to exude. Their versatility, as well as usability, has made them one of the very basic furnishings home makers opt to change when they want to give their rooms a makeover. From heavily-embroidered muslins and plain-textured silks to lightweight cottons and muslins to even brocade and velvet curtains, there is no dearth of fabric for that perfect curtain for your room. From the by lanes of Sarojini Nagar in Delhi to the bustling Crawford Market of Mumbai to the small lanes of New Market in Kolkata, you will always have for your buying pleasure a huge variety of options for fabrics and designs when out shopping for curtains.

So now how do we hang these beautiful yards of fabric. Whether you choose to go minimalist or want to opt for curtains that will impart a rich look to your room, if the hanging style of your curtains goes even slightly wrong, your entire effort is sure to go down the drain. So never ever be in a hurry to hang your curtains. Think well, consider the different parameters of hanging curtains and then start your job. If you are someone who is confused about what height to hang your curtains from or the best ways to hang that curtain you took days to select, read ahead for the simple dos and don’ts of hanging curtains. And, for sure you will get complimented by friends and family for that elusive style that carefully hung curtains will impart to your room.

So what are the do's and don'ts of hanging curtains!

Curtain hanging is by no means rocket science. It does not involve consultations with some high-end interior designer or searching the World Wide Web for days together to gather information on the correct curtain hanging styles. Just follow the given below basic dos and don’ts and you will be all set to go. We will first discuss some important dos for curtains.

DO: Use a template

Using a simple template for hanging your curtains ensures that the curtains as well as the curtain rods are at the same height and width for every identical window and door. This will not just help save you the hassle of re-measuring every single time, but also help give your room a professional look. Just measure one door or window using two pieces of cardboard, which are arranged at a 90-degree angle according to your preference and you are ready to use it for other door and windows too.

DO: Rememeber to use enough fabric

This is one of the first and foremost important tips that I could give regarding curtains. Before hanging those curtains, you first need to shop for curtains. Always, always make sure that you have more fabric than the dimension of your door or window – both lengthwise and breadth wise. Measure your door or window dimensions and buy curtains that would just stop at half an inch above the floor of the room. Another very important tip to remember is that the width of the curtain should be 2-2.5 the width of the door/window. This will give you the freedom to draw the curtains when you like and yet not compromise on the drape of the curtain.

DO: Hang High

This is another Holy Grail when it comes to curtains. This not just gives an illusion of space and makes the ceiling appear higher, but also looks professional and elegant. So fix that curtain rod or pole as high as you can. A thumb rule to follow here would be to hang curtains at a maximum height of 12 inches and a minimum height of 4 inches above the top of your door or window. In this picture, designers Arquiteto Aquiles Nicolas Kilaris have used very high curtains to impart a feel of space and height in the room.

DO: Choose appropriate material

This is a no-brainer. Even the most unimaginative person would surely think twice before selecting that curtain fabric. Fabric, by far, plays one of the most important roles when it comes to choosing curtains and gives you the opportunity to showcase your personal touch. Whether you decide to opt for sheer or transparent fabrics or heavy, opaque ones, take care to check their drape and gathering before buying. A thumb rule here would be to opt for opaque materials such as corduroy, velvet, or similar ones, for places where you would prefer privacy and light fabrics and silk or light cottons for rooms, like the living room where you would want a little bit of sunlight.

DON'T: Go too narrow

Want to make your window appear larger than it actually is. Well, here comes another very important rule when it comes to hanging curtains. Always ensure that your curtain rods are wider than your window by at least a couple of inches. If they are anywhere between 8’’-12’,’ then there is nothing better. This not just creates an illusion of a wider window, but this also looks aesthetically pleasing and gives you the option of drawing in or drawing out the curtains, without affecting the amount of light entering the room.

DON'T: go too short

Buy curtains that will extend till the floor and if your concern is about cleaning, then leave a gap of half an inch. If you somehow have bought curtains that are much shorter, then add some contrasting fabric at the bottom to just add your personal touch. So buy your favorite curtains, get them steamed or ironed, and hang them as advised above and see the difference it makes.
