Sweeping and scrubbing sound easy until you actually have to sweep, scrub, mop, and dust the entire house. General housecleaning is an essential chore that all home dwellers must practice -- but how can you even have time to clean the areas of your house when you're pre-occupied with work, study, and your personal life? Cleaning your home can take up a whole day or two, but it doesn't have to eat up your full time. The key is regular cleaning -- with an everyday routine and a cleaning checklist, you surely don't have to worry about a thing. Check out these tips we've provided to efficiently and effectively clean your lovely home.

Plan and prepare

Plan ahead on deciding when you are cleaning and how long you want it to take as this will guide you on setting up your cleaning schedule. Always have a cleaning checklist and a plan of attack to know which rooms you plan to start and finish your cleaning in. This will help expedite the process and ensure you are not duplicating your efforts, especially if more than one person is involved in the cleaning. It also works better to do a little bit every day so that the work doesn't pile up, and also have major-cleaning day a few times a month.

One smart tip is to work from the top down, if at all possible. You don't want to vacuum and then get crumbs all over the floor, or dust the bottom of something and knock more dust down when you work your way up onto the previously uncleaned areas. If you don’t have much time, start with the clutter first and work your way to more serious things from there.

Also, working your way from the back of the house to the front is an ideal general housekeeping tip. Make a plan so that you can vacuum, sweep, and mop all rooms together and you don't have to go from one task to another.

Cleaning the living room

In a living room setting like this, sweep and mop down the stairs first, then dust the ceiling, walls, furniture and decorative furnishings afterwards. Clean the floor by vacuuming the rug or carpet, then by sweeping and mopping the rest. Alternatively, try using a dry dust mop if you have tile or wooden floors. You can use a carpet sweeper for the carpet too. Both involve less fuss than getting out the vacuum and will let you go longer between vacuuming sessions.

Keep in mind that the living room is social area of the house where family and friends gather around, so an air freshener might be useful to bring some pleasant scents to the room.

Cleaning the kitchen area

This is an important area where everyday cleaning must be observed. As a part of the house where all our indulged food is cooked and prepared, it is imperative to keep the kitchen always clean and organized.

Make sure dishes are washed right after every meal -- chinaware can be run through the dishwasher but pots and pans are cleaned better manually. Remember, dry the dishes so you don't risk water stains on glass or bacteria festering in the water. Appliances such as the oven, stove, and microwave should be cleaned by soapy water regularly too. Also, organizing the cabinetry is a must to better distinguish items in their specific category.

Organizing the bedroom essentials

The bedroom is your sanctuary, and it is a basic requisite to make sure it is kept neat and tidy. You don't want dust and dirt wander in the room where you sleep so regularly wipe down furniture, cabinetry, and shelves to avoid the building up of these unwanted visitors. Of course, wash your bed linens twice a month as fungus can grow in the sheets. Organize your closet too, keeping items together and the garments you wear most on top.

Cleaning the bathroom

Four key areas must be kept in mind when cleaning the bathroom -- the shower or tub, the sink, the mirror, and of course, the toilet. Start with the dirtiest part;  throw on a pair of rubber gloves to keep your hands away from the grime and bacteria, give the toilet a gentle rub down with a sponge and hot water to loosen everything, and scrub with a toilet cleaner. Go ahead and finish cleaning the sink and shower by also scrubbing with a cleaner and a bristled sponge. Lastly, wipe down dirty mirror smudges with soapy water and a damp towel. Your bathroom will be sparkly clean in no time!

Keeping other public areas clean and tidy

Outdoor tasks can help create a better living environment, though they're pretty easy to neglect. Raking leaves helps to prevent mold growth that happens in wet climates after raining. Doing so regularly will also assist in dropping the bug count in your yard or back patio and leave the area looking neat and cared for.

Always walk through the outer areas of your house and pick up trash like you would in your interiors. Also, watch out for cob webs that build outside and make sure they are out of sight in no time.

Wrapping up and adding finishing touches

Now that you're done with all the dirty work, it's time to wrap up and make sure everything is spotlessly clean. Put back center pieces, room decor, and potted plants onto their right places and enjoy the tidy work you've done! Just remember, regular cleaning will actually give you less work than waiting for all the dirt and residue pile up. So get up and start cleaning your home!
