There is something truly special about properties that are able to combine tradition and 21st century modern living requirements together as one. It feels as though we are able to get the very best of both worlds, harnessing the memories of the things we love most with all the comforts we've come to realise that we cannot live without. In the following ideabook, you are about to see a traditional barn shape fused together with sleek interiors and a clever internal spatial layout. Take a look…

Tradition meets today

Painted in a stealthy shade of grey, the deep tone of the timber panels creates a dramatic contrast against the bright blue sky and lush greenery. Typical to the area yet contemporary in nature, the home, despite its modern appeal, integrates nicely into its environment. The barn style is forever a favourite – it's cosy, charming and full of character. The architects, in this instance, have melded the best of both worlds as one, fusing tradition and 21st century style together.

A story to tell

Located near the Seine Estuary, the talented architects were given free reign to design this holiday home – a rare opportunity! The façade of this home is similar to that of others in the area, challenging the existing vernacular that pays tribute to the Norman lands. An architectural feat, the impressive monochrome volume could be erected without any frame, almost like flat pack furniture, where the structure is supported by its own load bearing capabilities.

The best way to enjoy the countryside

Like a wooden tongue, this charming terrace brings the interior spaces outside, inviting the occupants to relax in the sunshine. The elongated shape of the structure helps to manage the intake of natural light, allowing the internal spaces to feel bright and airy. We can also see that the glazing is deliberately oversized, connecting the living and external zones together. The cherry wood terrace offers the occupants an unique area to lounge about, taking a moment away from the stress of big city life.

Wood on wood

The interior really took us by surprise! Covered in natural, unfinished wood, the ubiquitous grey façade has an incredible contrast on the inside. Warm, full of light and inviting, the grain of the wood gives this home a touch of quintessential country charm. Various openings have been cut out of the wooden surfaces, inviting the occupants to contemplate the geometry of the internal spaces, as well as feeling as though the beautiful view follows them wherever they go.

A modern rustic bathroom

The architects have managed to brilliantly merge contemporary rustic charm without denying any modern comfort. The rustic style bathroom combines the natural, earthy tones of wood with geometric 21st century fittings and fixtures. We can't help but feel as though we are in the setting of an exclusive Nordic spa.

Angles & peaks

There is truly something magnificent about this scene. The seamless junctions between the roof and walls will make the knees of any design aficionado weak. Adding an industrial element, the white tubular light fittings resemble the inside of grain silos, which no doubt, pay homage to the barn style shape of the building. This space also makes us aware of the internal volume of the property, showing off the ingenuity of the architects in the very best light possible.
