There are many reasons a person can wind up with a spare room. Yet sometimes when a given space in the home doesn’t have a specific purpose, it can merely become a place to stow excess clutter. At homify we are of the philosophy that getting the clutter out of the home is of utmost importance. Doing so is certainly good for aesthetic appeal. Something we don’t emphasise quite as much is that clearing out the excess can unleash new potential for different places in the home. Once you’ve cleared out some space, however, it can be difficult to know what exactly to do with the room. Alternatively, perhaps one of your children has moved out and now you have a spare bedroom and it’s difficult to imagine beyond the nostalgia you feel about your child growing up. . What we’re here to do today is figure out some inspiring uses for that room. We feel that if you’re lucky enough to have a spare room, it’s best to use it to its fullest! So dust off the cobwebs, donate some of the excess, and read this guide to brainstorm the massive potential of your unused space.

Add a cosy guest room

Enticing loved ones to visit is much easier when you can promise a cosy space to stay. Your home will become the place to be when holidays role around as other relatives might only have a sofa or blow-up mattress to offer the guests. Guest rooms are also ideal if your children often have friends over to spend the night. You may even consider renting out your guest room to travellers through services like Air B&B. Many of us have some extra furnishings lying around, things we’ve inherited or bought with every intention of using them but haven’t found a purpose. The guest room is great for displaying that artwork that doesn’t quite fit anywhere else or that extra side table. Gather those items and put together a little guest bedroom! We love this room because it is simple yet quite cosy. Pairing bedclothes thoughtfully and adding a comfy rug will do the trick.

Create the perfect home office

Today more and more of us work remotely. It can be tiresome to locate spots outside of the home fit for getting things done. Additionally, with little ones in toe, some of us are confined to the home but are easily distracted by other tasks. A home office can be a place of solace and productivity in the midst of a full house. All you have to do to get started is add a desk with a comfortable office chair and some storage for papers and books. A luxurious chair for clients or other important professional guests like this one is an added bonus. This is also a great place to show off honours and certificates you’ve achieved at work. Make sure the office is well lit and not over cluttered, however. Keep the desk free of unnecessary items and include plants to help promote creativity and concentration.

Put together a playroom

If your kids were already sharing a bedroom and you have come into a little extra space, consider keeping their cohabitating arrangement and creating a playroom for them to use. Designating a separate room for play is actually a great method for helping your child to have more restful sleep. They will grow to feel less stimulated in their bedrooms when they stop associating it with all the other activities they do in their bedroom. A playroom can also be located in a more central location of the house for better supervision. On the other hand, the playroom could be somewhere that the children can make as much noise as they want without disturbing others. Include some of your child’s favourite activities like an art easel, chalkboard paint or even a rock wall. Allow your child to decorate with their favourite characters and colours.

A little library

Reading consistently is an important thing to have as a priority in our lives. In a world where we’re almost always glued to the screen—for work and for play—we lose the sort of active engagement of our imaginations that reading can afford us. In fact, reading literally makes you smarter. It’s a habit that must be built in the absence of distraction. Why not make your spare room into a library? Many of us are already bookworms. It can take a long time to create our book collections so when we feel proud of them they deserve to be on display. Making a home library is quite simple, too. Incorporate lots of shelves, inbuilt or otherwise, get yourself a cosy chair, and you’re good to go! Add some encouraging decorations and inviting decorations to make the space warm and inviting, and you might find your whole family turning up here to get some reading done.

Make a space for cinematic excellence

After a long day a favourite pastime for many people is to gather with some friends or loved ones and watch a film or critically acclaimed television series. Some even make a coordinated weekly event of it. Perhaps you and your friends love Game of Thrones and meet up each week for dinner and to watch the latest episode. Maybe you and your partner have a guilty pleasure for binge watching rom coms. Whatever it is, investing in some luxurious seating and a big screen TV will make your home the centre of the action. You might also consider going with a projector instead of a conventional television. This home theatre by Dynamic Home Cinéma shows just how extravagant you can get with this idea. Someone pass the popcorn!

Finally get into the best shape of your life

Exercise is essential to all of us, no matter what shape we’re in at present. Going to the gym can be expensive, time consuming and intimidating. It can be difficult to stick with a set workout regimen when we already have to commute to and from work in addition to taking our children to various events and obligations. Investing in some equipment and making your spare room into a home gym is an ideal means of tackling these concerns. It could truly be the thing that finally gets you into the best shape of your life. Maybe conventional workouts on the treadmill or weightlifting aren’t your style. In this case transform the spare room into a relaxing yoga studio or you can even install a bar and take up ballet!

We hope these ideas have gotten you inspired to use your spare room to its fullest potential. If you need som help getting the clutter out of your home, check out these 7 tips for decluttering your home . Happy decorating!
