It’s not just the avid gardeners amongst us who appreciate a bit of greenery; incorporating plants or even indoor gardens into the home is becoming increasingly popular. The addition of a few potted plants around the home can drastically improve a space by filling it with life and colour.
But this begs the question, which plants to choose?
Today we’re going to answer that question with our predictions for 2017’s trendiest plants…
Moving outside the home now, let’s think about what will be popular in the garden this year. This takes us to the topic of dwarf shrubs. Dwarf shrubs are increasingly popular due to their low-maintenance nature; many of us with smaller gardens don’t want to spend all of our time trimming and pruning, so smaller shrubbery just makes sense!
Research has shown that everyday houseplants can go some way towards purifying the air by mopping up toxins from cleaning products, pollution and the general carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so we’re seeing a trend towards including certain plants in the home for reasons other than their aesthetics.
There’s a wealth of options for air purifying plants such as the peaceful lily pictured above.
2016 saw a trend towards the inclusion of tropical plants in the home, and there’s no sign of this declining. Palms will remain ever-popular in 2017, with a particular emphasis on bold, eye-catching foliage. We expect the lady palm pictured above to be popular, as well as the fern palm with its pretty fringed leaves, the livistona palm, and the eye-catching fishtail palm.
Cacti were particularly popular in 2016, and their popularity may decline this year, but we expect that aloe vera will be replacing them as the low-maintenance plant of choice.
Potted plants can contribute greatly to the home’s aesthetic, and larger plants that draw attention like figs are going down well. We expect that they’ll remain popular in 2017, but whereas last year the fiddle leaf fig was the most popular incarnation, we expect its close relative, the weeping fig, will take its place this year.
We hope our list has helped plant a few foliage ideas in your mind. While we’re on the subject of 2017’s trends, check out the 2017 bedroom design trends that everyone needs to know.
