It's honestly amazing that ceilings are one of the most forgotten about structural components of any home, considering they literally provide shelter from the elements. Here at homify we're always looking to cover every aspect and angle of every home – ceilings included. Ceilings from an interior perspective should be sturdy, stable, clean and well-designed!

From historic stone ceilings, to exposed bricks, plaster, stucco and timber beams – all ceilings deserve to be appreciated in their own right.  The artice below will list several different types of interior ceilings, how to care for them and how to make them cohesively mesh with the interior of your home. Take a look, get inspired and start to homify your house.

1. White-washed wood beams

Wood beams are popular in older and historic homes, however they're making a comeback with modern and industrial-style homes as well. Although a nice timber wood beam can be great with a stark white ceiling – some are look for a lighter colour all around and a nice stone wash method is the best way to do this. If you're looking at exposed ceiling beams, consider painting them the same colour as your home to add a sense of height and lightness to your space – as seen in this bedroom.

2. Architectural details

Cornices and decorative motifs are decorative details that are typically left to homes that are larger and more expensive – but we want you to rethink think. Architectural details can add a sense of character to your home and make it stand out as being unique. The best part about these details is that you can now buy cheap components that are replicas of these historic pieces to achieve the same look!

3. Domed

A more sever structural detail is a domed ceiling. Not found too often in the average home, it really changes the look and creates a grand, extravagent gesture in any space. Keep domed ceilings in dining rooms, foyers, lobbies and hallways.

4. Rustic wood

Back to those exposed raw ceilings again! We can't get enough of them! This home is a perfect combination of rustic and modern and we love it! With a raw stone wall and white-washed timbers on the ceiling – and the modern furnishings, this home is a modern and trusting classic all-in-one.

5. Scandinavian timber beams

Here, we have exposed ceiling beams on a lighter note. They're more spread about, offer a stronger contrast to the stark white ceiling and work well with the warm, wooden colour scheme of the room. Browns always work well with almost any wall colour – especially homes that use gray as a main colour.

6. Classic white

If all else fails – classic white will never fail you. A fresh coat of white paint will liven a room up and add an additional sense of height and depth. Especially in traditional alt-bay styles of homes and apartments, white is the original colour, and sticking to historically-accurate details is always a plus!

We hope we've taught you not to forget your ceiling as a major design component in your home! For more renovation and makeover suggestions, homify has all that you could possible need.
