Very little, if anything, is ever achieved without some concessions or compromise. We achieve by overcoming problems, and by doing so the achievement itself becomes greater.

This paradigm is exemplified in the story of the single storey wood-frame villa we’ll be taking a look at today. This French home, found near the Swiss border, came into being through the architect’s astute problem solving, as the villa is located near a historical monument and therefore must not exceed a certain size.

Let’s see what they’ve done with the property…

Superfluous space

Surveying the property from its entrance, one can’t help but appreciate the size of the area around the home. The lawn in front of the home is of enviable proportions, while the driveway could provide plenty of extra parking when guest visit the property.

The perfect plan

The house is contained within one vast, single storey in order to solve the problem created by height restrictions. One large, open-plan living room, kitchen and dining room space occupies almost half of the home, and alongside it we find three bedrooms, a large bathroom, separate toilet at the entrance – for guests – and a garage that can house two cars! Not bad for a bungalow.

The light-filled living room

Inside the open-plan living room we find a fairly minimalist, modern space, with white dominating the décor and unusual grey and white mosaic walls.

Perhaps the home’s most attractive feature is the fantastic amount of natural light that floods the open-plan area thanks to the glass patio doors and the skylights above. The extent to which glass has been incorporated into the property beautifully blurs the distinction between outdoor and indoor space. Here in the living room the light reflects from the white tiles on the floor to create a brilliantly bright room.

The tiniest terrace you will ever see

At the rea of the property we find substantial garden space with another large lawn- perfect for young children to play. There’s also a tiny sheltered terrace space surrounding the home, allowing the occupants the opportunity to go outdoors even in inclement weather.

One last look

We hope you’ve our tour of this home that sits beautifully amongst its surroundings, while providing practical solution to a family’s needs.
