Perfect for keeping the kids busy during the day, luxuriant nighttime swims, and poolside cocktails with your friends, a swimming pool is always a fantastic addition to your home. And while swimming pools may seem like the ultimate luxury, that doesn't mean you need a mansion to install one! These days you don't need an expansive backyard, swimming pools can be installed on almost any plot of land, just take a look at today's garden pool!

The owners of this home decided it was time for an upgrade in the garden, and we are certainly glad that they decided to talk to our homify experts, because the results a spectacular. With limited space enclosed by the surrounding properties the designers have managed to construct a uniquely shaped pool, surrounded by gorgeous garden features, and a small deck for sunbathing. We're sure you're as excited as we are to see the results, so let's get started!

Before: the shape of the pool

As you can see they have dug up the entire garden; this is no small scale project! When it comes to garden renovations this is often the best way to do it, as trying to work within the strictures of an existing garden will present all sorts of obstacles in terms of deep or tangled roots and damage to the plants from the construction work. They have determined the unorthodox shape of the pool in order to maximise its size, with close attention paid to the surrounding garden that will come later.

Before: the work day

This may seem like a big undertaking, but you'll soon see that it is absolutely worth the trouble. This is definitely work for professionals, and we've got plenty of those on hand right here! We can see the elevated platform that will hold the pool has been shuttered and bolstered as they clear the space to be dug out.

This is getting exciting, let's take a look at the finished product!

After: a magical lagoon

Wow. What magical results! The swimming pool looks just like a hidden lagoon, right down to the sparkling green waters. The pool is in the L shape we saw in the construction phase, allowing it to occupy the maximum space available, with allowances for elevated decks. The pool itself is surrounded by a garden which only adds to the tropical feel, and we love how it reaches right to the boundary of the property.

After: a tanning deck

The small details are what make this garden so fantastic, and one of our favourite additions is the tanning deck. Installed in the far corner it is absolutely perfect for bathing in the sunshine on a fine afternoon, or keeping a lazy eye on the kids. As you can see they have added green wherever possible which really makes the place special.

After: The amazing terrace

To the left of the tanning deck is the main terrace of the garden, featuring an outdoor dining area sheltered by an awning so that you can entertain guests all year around. The clean timber look is really effective, adding a summer vibe, while the views from the deck of the stunning garden are sure to impress visitors. The off-kilter planter that runs along the boundary produces visual interest, while also unifying the far reaches of the garden with the rest of the space.

After: looking down

As we look down from the upper level we see that the living room opens onto the terrace with large glass sliding doors; an absolute must when you have a garden as dazzling as this one. You're definitely going to want as much of a view as possible when winter comes so that you can reminisce on the summer months spent lazing about outside, plus we have a feeling that lush garden is going to look very romantic in the rain. The retractable awning is crucial here, it allows protection from the sun when you are outside, however when it's time to move indoors you're going to want as much sun as possible to fill the interior of your home.

After: the garden

The entire pool is surrounded by a garden built into the elevated platform, but we really love the low stone wall that surrounds the pool, giving it a traditional feel that belies the thoroughly modern design.

After: the corner waterfall

As we said before, this design is all about little details coming together to make an impressive whole, an this may be our favourite: a miniature waterfall! Built into the corner of the pool it's a fantastic touch that really adds to the fairytale ambience.

What a fun and exciting project! It really doesn't require as much space as you might think to install a pool, and if you need some more inspiration we've got the perfect article for you with 10 perfect pools for small homes!
