It's perhaps the most important thing you can do for your home, and probably everyone's least favourite chore, but keeping a clean bathroom doesn't have to be so difficult. We all know how bad it can get in there, a breeding ground for bacteria and foul odours, it's essential not just for your comfort, but for your health to keep a sparkly clean bathroom. But fear not, here at homify we have your back, and we're going to show you some clever tips to help keep your bathroom flawless without creating more work for yourself than necessary.

So let's take a look at some pointers, from design, to materials, to simple everyday tasks that won't take you but a minute, that will save you toil and trouble down the road, and ensure your bathroom shimmers for you, your family, and guests alike…

1. Clean it daily

Or every second day… or every third… but just make sure it's regular! By giving your bathroom a quick but frequent wipe down you'll find it never gets out of hand, leading to a four hour marathon on your hands and knees with a scrubbing brush. Not only that but a neglected bathroom can get expensive with rotting wood, mould, and corroded surfaces all requiring replacement and renovation to fix if they get too bad.

2. Keep your bathroom sparse

The bathroom is not the place for knick knacks, so if you have a penchant for figurines or memorabilia, keep it in the living room! The bathroom is somewhere you should be able to relax, add a few candles, a pot plant, maybe some incense, but keep it simple and uncluttered. By filling your bathroom with unnecessary decorations you are giving dust and bacteria a multitude of places to hide, and quadrupling your work when it's time to clean.

3. Ensure your bathroom is well lit

Sometimes the reason our bathrooms get so bad is simply ignorance, and if you've got a busy schedule that doesn't have a lot of empty spaces for soaking in the bath, you may not even notice your bathroom needs a clean until it's too late. Make sure your bathroom has ample lighting so that you can immediately spot when a surface needs a quick wipe, or your toilet needs a quick scrub. Ideally you should allow as much natural light in as possible, and skylights are a great way to do that without compromising on privacy, but for those of us in apartments it's simply a matter of a bright bulb and perhaps a lamp or two.

4. Keep your cleaning products in clear view

Sometimes procrastination gets the best of all of us, but all it takes is a quick reminder of what needs to be done to set us back on track. By keeping your cleaning products handy and in clear view you'll find it really doesn't seem so time consuming to give your surfaces a quick spray anytime you notice the grime building, and it won't feel like such a chore setting yourself up for a big clean.

5. Consider the materials of your bathroom

This one is for those of you in the design or renovation stages; consider functionality, and when it comes to the bathroom sleek surfaces will make your life a lot easier. Avoid carpeting the floor, it may seem comforting in winter, but the moisture will lead to mould in no time. Tiles are easy to wipe down, and you can go floor to ceiling to provide a nice design flourish, and secretly a huge a timesaver; just take the mop and run it over the whole room! Alternately metal surfaces and timber are also easy to wipe down, just be sure to consult your carpenter about the best wood for the room, as it can take on moisture and rot if not chosen carefully.

6. Use light colours when decorating

By using light colours and sleek reflective surfaces you'll give dirt nowhere to hide. It may be tempting to use dark hues to conceal unsightly stains, but you can't hide odours, and again, this is all about not letting it get out of hand. Not only that, but bright colours will leave you feeling extra refreshed after a nice meditative bath.

7. Use plants to clean the air

Plants are nature's air freshener, and from a design standpoint they add an aesthetic freshness that will make any bathroom feel cool and clean. They are also a great way to combat odours, consider fresh herbs or scented flowers as an alternative to the more traditional potpourri, as living plants will literally clean the air. Just be warned this will mean additional upkeep and cleaning as the soil is sure to spill occasionally, and leaves wither, but we think the trade-off is definitely worth it.

8. Take it outdoors!

Now we know this isn't possible for everyone, but even a small backyard will allow for an outdoor bath. Whether it's connected to the plumbing or a stand alone fire bath, an outdoor bath gives you the benefit of fresh air, prevents your bathroom from getting too moist, and best of all you can just spray it down with a hose! Well you might need to take a little bit more care cleaning it than that, but you get the idea.

We hope these tips for a clean bathroom make your life a whole lot easier, after all, that's what we're here for! In fact we've got even more tips for keeping your whole home tidy.
