Today we’re heading to Kyoto, Japan, to tour a spacious apartment recently renovated by architects, Alts Design Office. This attractive, open-plan space has a fairly minimalist feel; it’s modern in design, and tastefully understated. Let’s take a look…

The convenient kitchen

Upon entering the apartment, an immediate left turn takes towards the kitchen and dining room area. Although the apartment is open-plan, the kitchen space is clearly delineated thanks to a change in ceiling height and colour, and lightly coloured wooden flooring.

A single, central unit contains the sink, stove and cabinetry in this conveniently compact kitchen. The dining table’s adjacent placement is useful for the meal preparation process, and it helps to define this separate area within the open-plan space.

Study the room further

Moving through the apartment we find a charming little work space in the far corner. The apartment as a whole is a subtle blend of modern minimalism, with a touch of rustic, and more traditional Japanese style.

Here, the simple, modern desk rests against the wooden wall of a more traditional style. The workspace is superbly lit thanks to the natural light streaming through the glass patio doors.

Classic living room

Less is more in this luxurious living room comprised of a dark wooden coffee table and classic leather sofa.

This simple and elegant design compliments the apartment’s minimalist feel, and the darker tones of the sofa and table contrast the lighter wooden tones of the rest of the apartment; helping to define the different areas of the open-plan living space.

Subtle storage

As we face the wall in front of the sofa we can appreciate the rich tapestry of colours that the apartment is comprised of: the grey, stonewash floor is balanced by the darker grey ceiling, and interspersed by the white walls and lighter wooden tones in between.

Alcoves in the wall, along with some creative shelving provide subtle storage solutions for the apartment.

The apartment as a whole

The apartment as a whole is incredibly spacious, and yet doesn’t feel empty thanks to the careful design. The addition of well-placed potted plants around the home: on the dining table, coffee table, desk and between the patio doors, create a homely atmosphere and sense of vitality to the apartment.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our tour of this elegant apartment, if so, come with us on another tour for more jaw-dropping Japanese design.
