Today's home tour is of a house called 'The Uji House', and is one of several projects showcasing the interiors of the powerhouse Japanese design firm, Alt Design.

The specifications of the house are impressive: high ceilings, modern amenities, natural woods used generously throughout and an energy efficient, self-climatising design that saves money as well.

Inside, the house has the feel of a modern bungalow, with fluid spaces, winding staircases, several loft nooks and rooms that manage to achieve a serene sense of calm and privacy.

Bungalow kitchen

The kitchen and dining areas are absolutely cosy: the high ceilings give the dining area air and expanse while the rosewood-enclosed kitchen that looks out onto the dining area makes it a truly unique and dynamic space.

And what is not to love about the on-trend hanging bulbs, all the rage now since their simple, lampshade-less style takes up way less air space and illuminates with a twinkle.

Mellow living

Just off the kitchen and dining area is this living room, visually accessible to kitchen through a large glass window and open to the outside wood patio by a large, sliding door.

The room benefits from the various woods that have been used in the construction of its walls, floors and ceilings – a really mellow atmosphere dominates. And to keep the mellow going when the sun goes down, the hanging dining room bulbs offer a generous enough amount of light to this area, which only needs a few small reading lamps otherwise.

Multi-functional front space

Here is the front entrance, located to the left of the dining room and kitchen.

You would not be alone in think that the light wood wall shelf on the left wall could double as stairs, because they do, and they lead to an upstairs loft nook that overlooks the kitchen area, and which is fully equipped with throw pillows and mini table for curling up and enjoying a book--and to get a bird's eye view on the main living areas.

Fresh, simple and clean

The downstairs bathroom is a jewel of Japanese bathroom design: effortless-looking planning wins again. A bold blue accent wall is the focus of the space, while an industrial style, circular metal sink takes up as little space as possible in the corner, an ultra-modern compliment to the square European toilet. As far as decor goes, a diamond triangle mirror, a wood shelf and a few other small wall knick knacks do their job well in giving the room a bit of warmth without overtaking the small space. It is a perfect room to sum up this delightful example of Japanese style.
