For most, the homes of our dreams are just that, dreams. We might fancifully imagine the kinds of special features we’d like our homes to have without acknowledging the fact that constructing a home that fulfils our dreams is actually possible. It can be scary to try to put dreams into action when there’s always a chance for failure. Still, you won’t know what you (or your budget) are capable of until you try!

Once you’ve come to terms with the fact that you’re committed to making your dreams a reality, it’s a good idea to make a plan of action. Major renovation and construction projects can be overwhelming, however. That’s why we’ve gone ahead and crafted a list for you. In this guide we will cover the ins and outs of gathering inspiration, brainstorming, and putting the ideas into action. Let’s begin!

Get inspired!

For starters, daring to dream requires a good dose of inspiration. Start by looking through homify360 projects on our magazine page for ideas about what’s trendy right now in the realms of architecture and interior design. If you’re looking for something a bit more specific, head to the Ideabooks where you can search keywords to connect your ideas with visual depictions and information from our experts. You can save these images as you go to create a repertoire of inspirational images that stole your heart.

You’ll likely begin to recognise the patterns that begin to emerge in the photos you choose. For instance, if you seem attracted to white spaces and thoughtful details, Scandinavian design is for you. Our site also breaks down different design persuasions into digestible keywords that make exploring the different options easy.

Diagnose the potential of your current house

Completely bulldozing your current home with the hope of constructing something better in its place is a bit drastic. It’s better to explore renovation possibilities first. Renovations will allow you to stay in the comforts of your own home for a good deal of the project, and it’ll likely save you a good deal of money.

To assess whether renovations are on the cards for you, begin by diagnosing the potential of your current house. Perhaps your home is functional, and the interior layout works well for you and your family. That was the case for the family that lived in the home pictured here. They decided it was mainly the look of the exterior that they’d like to change, not the structure itself. That’s quite a big departure from the notion of demolishing the entire thing to start from scratch!

Sketch it out

Returning to the idea that it’s okay to dream and shamelessly imagine what it is that you’d like to see in your dream home, take to sketching. You don’t need to be an architect to play around with sketching your ideal structure. This is actually a great time to have a bit of fun with the project. Just draw your ideas, and label them for clarity if you’re not an artist.

Feel free to draw many different pictures to get a clearer scope of what it is you’d like to see in the house. You can sketch the home’s exterior at multiple angles and experiment with cross-sectional images, too. Once you get over your reservations about not being an exceptionally skilled drawer, the ideas will start to flow. Use a ruler or a protractor for assistance. There are also computer programs available for sketching if you’d like to get fancy.

Look for a professional and show her your ideas

Now that you’ve developed a vision, it’s time to consult a professional that can help you make your dreams a reality. An architect is your best bet here. Keep a firm understanding of what you’re looking for, but also allow these professionals to guide you. Know what you simply can’t live without and what you’re willing to compromise over. The architect can take your ideas (and even your sketches) and create a more detailed image of what it is that you’re looking for, as architects at Design Guild did here.

Ask the architect to give you a budget estimate of the cost. If it seems beyond your price range, see if they can tweak the size dimensions of the home or swap materials. There are lots of possibilities in this regard! As for locating an architect, you can find plenty of them in the Professional section on our website.

Make a decision

As we mentioned briefly above, it’s crucial that you know which features of the home are most important for you. It can help to start by making a list of all the things you’d like to have being as extravagant as you’d like. Then, you can go through and narrow down a handful of things that matter most.

For instance, the owner of this house knew for certain that they were unwilling to bargain when it came to the in-ground pool and the photovoltaic system. Take knowing what you want a step further by ascertaining how much it will cost. To figure this out, compare prices online and do some maths yourself to establish a ballpark range. Then, consult a contractor or your architect to find out specifics for the price relating to your home in particular.

Go ahead and build your dream house!

After you’ve brainstormed, set a plan, contacted the relevant professionals, and established a budget you’re read to build! Remember to be patient and flexible as the construction process unfolds. Make plans for accommodations while the house is being built, and try to enjoy the process.

At times it might feel like there’s no end in sight, but the final product will be worth it. Daring to seek out what you want for your home will make all the hard work worthwhile once you can see your amazing ideas materialise. The owner of this home, for example, dreamt of creating a different kind of above-ground pool and the result is truly dazzling!
