The house M, designed by FAARQ, is situated in a private neighborhood in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with direct access to a river on the site. Comprising three bedrooms, a living room and kitchen, expansive deck surfaces, terraces and a pool – there's not much lacking in this sophisticated abode.

Three materials are used extensively throughout the design; masonry, timber and concrete. The arrangement of the house on the site acts to maximise the passive solar qualities of the home while also taking full advantage of the incredible views. Addressing the dialogue between inside and out, public and private, the design seeks to adapt to the different situations it will encounter – and it does so artfully. Let's take a closer look!

From street view

From the street, the home is encased – protected. One is given but a few glimpses into the private realm of the home. The formal composition is elegant and the various materials are used in interesting combinations. Dramatic external lighting completely changes the atmosphere of the house when the sun goes down. The entrance is clearly highlighted by both the formal arrangement and the lighting design.

Toward the garden

Opening out towards the private gardens, pool and river, the home peels back its armor to create a seamless relationship between inside and out. The materials – masonry, concrete and timber – are used thoughtfully to create a warm and sophisticated exterior… and just look at that picture-perfect lawn! For more design inspiration on all things outdoors – from porches to decks and terraces – you will find an abundance of examples here!

The entry

A gap between the front street facade and the rock wall leads us down the side of the house toward the entry. It is afforded a privacy from the street and establishes a journey from the urban outside world to the private inner sanctum. Set within a recess and protected overhead, it affords a degree of privacy and security.

Open plan living

Inside the home, the material palette remains the same. The addition of black steel elements and black leather couches gives the space a striking and sophisticated aesthetic. It feels at once industrial and homely. The open plan space connects the living, dining and kitchen areas seamlessly, while the use of ceiling bulkheads act to define the various spaces. A dramatic staircase

This incredible and very dramatic feature stairwell spirals up from the ground floor to the upper level. The vertical steel elements that form a balustrade to enclose the stairwell are finished in black and extend the full height of the space. The same timber used for the flooring is employed for the stair treads and risers, elegantly wrapping around and up.
